How Tekmetric Supports Growth and Transparency at Toyo Automotive

Henderson Johnson, founder of TA Automotive of Conyers, leveraged his extensive automotive experience and master certification to transition from technician to independent business owner, fostering a culture of transparency and customer care while modernizing operations by replacing outdated shop management software with Tekmetric to support growth through enhanced digital communication and operational efficiency.

Henderson Johnson began his journey in auto repair as a child in New Orleans, assisting his father with taxi cab repairs. This early exposure led to a deep understanding of automobiles and a desire to own his own business. After completing an associate’s degree in Motor Vehicle Technology and earning multiple certifications, Henderson moved to Georgia and founded TA Automotive of Conyers in 2005. Under his leadership, the shop is experiencing new growth, driven by operational decisions that modernize the business.

Having a Vision

Henderson always aspired to run his own business, valuing challenges and growth. He believes in progressing beyond the technician role and emphasizes the importance of master certification before starting a business. His experience at Lexus, where he earned his master certification, was foundational before launching TA Automotive.

Being Independent

Choosing the independent route allowed Henderson to learn all aspects of running and growing a business, including marketing. He notes the significant mindset shift required to transition from technician to entrepreneur, emphasizing that this is an ongoing process.

Setting the Right Example

TA Automotive’s culture centers on transparency and customer care. Henderson stresses honesty with customers, even when delivering unwelcome news, and believes in treating people as he would like to be treated. He leads by example, ensuring his team knows he has performed every task he asks of them. Continuous self-reflection and improvement are key to his leadership style.

Updating What's Obsolete

Henderson recognized the limitations of his old shop management system, which was not web-enabled and lacked features like email communication, digital inspections, and remote access. Despite efforts to make it work remotely, it could not meet modern customer communication needs.

A Tool Designed for Growth

After searching for a suitable system, Henderson adopted Tekmetric, which improved customer communication and integrated various business functions. Features like texting invoices, integrating parts ordering, and comprehensive reporting have been instrumental in tracking business performance and supporting growth.

Adjust & Fine-Tune

Henderson likens business management to driving a car—constant adjustments are necessary. He values feedback and measurement, using Tekmetric’s tools to monitor and fine-tune operations for continued growth.

Adjusting to Uncertainty

In response to health concerns, TA Automotive implemented social distancing, barriers, and enhanced cleaning. Switching to Tekmetric’s text-to-pay system enabled touchless payments, allowing Henderson to process payments remotely and securely, which was not possible with his previous system.

Keeping Everybody Honest

Tekmetric’s approval process ensures transparency and accountability. Customers approve work via their smartphones, agreeing to terms and conditions, which helps resolve disputes and maintains trust.

The Key to Owning a Business

Henderson emphasizes the importance of self-awareness, commitment, and having a solid plan. Building alliances and finding the right partners, such as Tekmetric, have been crucial to his renewed vision and business success. He values adding the right people and tools over simply increasing headcount or resources.
